Why are professional photographers so expensive?

Have you ever asked yourself that? Well...in my spare time (ha ha, that's funny) I try to keep up on my professional reading. This month, there was an article I read that discussed this very topic. It got me thinking that this would be a good blog topic.

ONE-HOUR SESSION

In the onset of digital photography, people would think that this would make a photographer's life easier and make things faster. In reality, it has added hours upon hours to our jobs! Before, with film, I would setup my sittings and ensure perfect lighting, shoot the sitting, and compose the photo in the lens. Then, I would send the film off to the processor for development. When the proofs returned, I would sort through the blinkers, put them into a proof folder and deliver to the customer.

Now, I still meter my lights, shoot my sitting and compose in the camera. However, I know in the back of my mind that I can adjust a lot of these things later in Photoshop. So, after a sitting, I will spend about an hour sorting through all the photos I took to find the best ones. I spend another hour pretouching the images (do a little retouching for the proofs), and then send them off to the processor to create the proof book. When the books come back, then I upload them onto the on-line proofer and deliver them. So, as you can see, I'm spending an additional 2-3 hours that I never did before. Thus, you’re really not paying $45-50 per hour for that one-hour session!

WEDDINGS

When shooting a typical 6-7 hour wedding, I will spend 3-4 hours sorting through the 400+ images, another 2-3 hours pretouching the best ones, and another 1-2 hours ordering the proofs and the Custom Keepsake Proof Box. Once the proofs arrive at my studio, I will organize them in sequence and prepare them for pickup. So, I’m really spending about 17 hours on the typical wedding coverage.

The article mentioned that the photographer is usually the one that “directs” the flow of the day, and to some extent that is accurate. When looking at the price the bride and grooms will pay for their photographer, there’s a lot to consider…not just the price of the coverage, but also if they get along with the photographer and will enjoy spending their entire wedding day with that person!

Another big time consuming part of weddings is if they order a wedding album. The new digital albums are great and extremely popular. I offer completely custom-built albums (no predesigned pages or set number of images). This means that I will typically spending between 12-16 hours building an album for the bride and groom. Although this is another downside to the wonderful digital world, I enjoy the creativity of this!

CHAIN STORES

Yes, they’re cheap! If you’re looking for price alone, then they’re the best option. But, as the saying goes “You get what you pay for.” As a professional photographer, I try to get to know my customers, spend time with them, make them comfortable, and do my best to get good expressions. A chain store probably doesn’t have patience to wait for a baby to stop crying or to be a photographer-on-the-move with a toddler in the studio. Many times after shooting a wedding, I feel like I’m not only the couple’s photographer, but also a friend and a guest at their wedding. I think this is why I still cry at many of the weddings I shoot. I feel like I know them!

Also, I become a personal photographer, shooting more than one event for a family. They can count on me, and know what they’re going to get by going with me. They’re going to get a professional with knowledge and expertise AND a friend!

Holiday Photo Cards

For anyone who is looking at ordering holiday photo cards, please keep in mind that it typically takes two weeks to get your order back. The best way to guarantee that your cards will be back in time for the holidays is to order them around November 15th. Keeping that in mind, you only have about three weeks! For design options, visit the portrait pricelist site and scroll down to "PhotoCards". There you'll find the prices and a link to the design brochure. Call or email with questions.

Is the fall flying by for anyone other than me? I feel like fall came and went in a matter of a week. The weather hasn't been helping this, but I think we've been so busy getting to know Mya and finishing up shooting high school seniors that we didn't get to enjoy it! By the way, Mya is going to be two months old and my son, Drew, will be two years old this week! Mya is getting more alert and active, and she's started to "coo" or talk this week. Its exciting! As for Drew...well, he's being his typically "monster" self. And loves to sing his A-B-C's and "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star".

Mya Irene Bindl

Well...she arrived, but not as expected. She came a bit early on the day of her scheduled c-section, so we ended up having her completely naturally! Born on August 25th at 3:13am. She was 8lbs. 7oz. and 20.5 inches long. In the photo, our lil' angel was one week old!

Update on Baby Bindl #2

Well, Baby Bindl #2 hasn't come on its own and Tuesday (the 25th) is coming fast! Josh, Drew and I have things ready around the house, and I've delivered the orders that I can PRE-baby.

I want to thank everyone for their understanding this summer and their sense of humor with my growing belly! Time flew by during this pregnancy and I think a lot of that had to do with the fact that I was busy and you all kept my mind off from the "monster" growing inside me! (If you know me, I lovingly refer to Drew as my first "monster", and he even responds to the nickname!)

Also, I want to thank Miss Laura Martin for watching Drew for the past two summers while I was shooting and we wish her the best of luck at UW-River Falls this fall. She will be greatly missed by Drew and myself.

Updates will be posted as time allows as I know many of you are anxious to see the "bundle of joy" when it arrives.

"When will you be taking off?"

I've been getting lots of questions about what my schedule will be after Baby Bindl #2 arrives on August 25th (or before if it decides to come early). So, here's what my plans are in case you're curious...I will not be filling any orders August 25th-September 15th. Any orders I receive during that time will be put on hold until September 15th, so you can expect them around the 30th. Also, I will not be "shooting" August 25th-September 30th. I will resume shooting on October 1st.

So, if you are a High School senior you can still schedule your sitting in October and have your yearbook to the school in time (by October 31st). If you are a family looking for fall pictures for the holidays, this is perfect timing for the leaf change.

The deadline for placing an order and getting it back before this break in service is August 15th. This will get your order to you before August 25th. Any orders placed after August 15th will not have a guaranteed delivery before the maternity break.

Class of 2010 - There's Still Time...

Want to book your senior sitting? There's still time! I've still got openings on Tuesdays and Wednesdays through August. Keep in mind that I will only be able to book until August 22nd (Baby Bindl #2 will be coming on August 25th, if not before) and then I'll be taking a couple weeks off. Marshall seniors...keep in mind that your yearbook pose is due to the school by October 31st.

New On-line Proofing Program

For those of you who have gone to my on-line proofing site in the past day, you probably have noticed a change. Yes, I am now on a new program. This program still offers the same capabilities as the previous program, but just has a different appearance. All of the passwords should still be the same as the previous program. If for some reason you experience any problems, please contact me.

Summer in Full Swing

Its hard to believe that its this time of year again, but I've been shooting the Class of 2010 now for two weeks! Its going well and the weather has been nice (for the most part), but now the heat is finally setting in. And, Baby Bindl #2 (the bundle of joy on the way) has not been affecting the sittings.

Bridal Fair

If you know of anyone who is planning a wedding this would be a great opportunity!  The Sun Prairie Round Table offers a FREE Bridal Fair the first Sunday in March.  It is a low-key, much smaller expo than that in Madison.  This provides you with lots of opportunity to talk one-on-one with the vendors!

I have attended the fair since they first started it in 2007.  If you're looking for a wedding photographer, this would be a great opportunity to see my work on display and I will be offering a "show discount".  Here are the details for the Bridal Fair:

When:   Sunday, March 1st 11:00am-3:00pm
Where:   Round Table
1611 N. Bristol St.
Sun Prairie, WI

Again, it is FREE to anyone and everyone.  They offer five $100 door prizes that can be used for services from any of the vendors in attendance.

Marshall Youth Wrestling Club

I had the pleasure of shooting the Marshall Youth Wrestling Club team and individual shots a couple of weeks ago.  Then, last Saturday, I was given the opportunity to go and shoot action shots at their tournament.

On Saturday, I had a great time.  The kids and families were wonderful!  I haven't been around a youth wrestling tournament in ages (my little brother used to wrestle, so its been a while).  I just can't get over how little some of them are!  Awww...only a couple more years and little Drew will try wrestling.

Here is the "silly" team photo from the Marshall Wrestling Club and a shot of a Marshall Youth wrestler taking down a Fort Atkinson wrestler at the tournament.
